What's the Future of Geauga Lake's Big Dipper Roller Coaster?
January snow now blankets Geauga Lake Park here as the dismantling and removal of the amusement park rides has momentarily ceased. Along with more than a dozen other rides, the historic Big Dipper roller coaster sits silently awaiting its fate.
Will it stay on as the centerpiece of a new residential/retail development, be sold to the highest bidder or be demolished?
Park and roller coaster fans are now focusing their efforts on saving the Big Dipper, enlisting the help of government officials, and even posting videos on YouTube.
That's after the park's owner, Cedar Fair, abruptly announced Sept. 21 that the traditional amusement park side of Geauga Lake would close. That leaves Cedar Fair to operate the waterpark side alone starting in May as Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom.
