Dominator Roller Coaster at Kings Dominion
Last spring, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg debuted "Griffon," a "floorless" drop coaster with a 90-degree plunge. This year, Kings Dominion introduces "Dominator," a floorless coaster that breaks two world records.
Dominator has a new home at Kings Dominion, off I-95 north of Richmond, but the coaster isn't new. It used to be called "Batman Knight Flight" at a theme park in Ohio that turned into a water park this year. Kings Dominion scored the ride.
Dominator screams with 4,210 feet of track. It displaced Kraken at SeaWorld in Orlando as the world's longest floorless roller coaster, said Kings Dominion spokesman John Pagel. It also has the largest loop of any roller coaster in the world.
Dominator's initial 148-foot drop readies riders to be flung upside down five times via a vertical loop, a roll and interlocking corkscrews. Top speed is 65 mph, and the whole thing lasts 2 minutes, 6 seconds. The coaster accommodates 1,400 riders per hour, but thrill seekers must be 54 inches tall to ride.
